Statement Of Support
Bill Smith and his grandson Taison, a post-graduate student at Arizona State University, have developed a thoughtful and promising vision for intergenerational housing. As someone who has spent my career advancing university-based models of intergenerational engagement, I have seen firsthand how shared living and learning environments can build empathy, social capital, and mutual growth across age groups. Intergenerational housing offers a powerful antidote to social isolation and creates communities where people of different generations live with, learn from, and support one another. Seniors bring an extraordinary wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and practical skills to these environments. Their experiences in service, teamwork, leadership, and resilience can profoundly influence young adults who are navigating their transitions into adulthood. Likewise, engaging with younger generations offers veterans renewed purpose, connection, and the opportunity to continue serving in meaningful new ways. Together, these intergenerational connections strengthen both individuals and our community at large. These are the kinds of innovations that anybody can get behind, and which have the power to transform our society.”
