What We Do
Why Independent Seniors are Retiring to College
In retirement, it’s not uncommon for seniors to find themselves isolated from their communities. Older Americans want active and stimulating retirement environments they can afford. Conventional retirement communities can be beautiful, but unfortunately, entirely separated from society. Many seniors want to attend lectures, classes and concerts which college life offers. Living on campus gives both older Americans and their college counterpart an incentive to help each other succeed and flourish. Retirement should be the next phase of life and not the end of active life.

How College Students Benefit:
The possibilities for College Students to benefit from intergenerational living are vast. Here are just a few ways college students benefit:
- Character building- strengthen attributes such as patience, empathy, and compassion.
- Purpose- some young students have trouble finding their calling. Intergenerational living places
such as ASU and other universities could lead students down the right path. - Learning- opportunity to learn from those who have more life experience.
- Companionship- students can form meaningful relationships with seniors.
- Events- students can help brainstorm, plan, and facilitate events for seniors
How Colleges & Universities Benefit:
The benefits of attracting seniors to on campus housing is extremely pragmatic. Student enrollment is declining by the millions, while U.S. Census data shows people 65 and older to be the country’s fastest growing demographic. Many colleges need to find other revenue sources and need to diversify. It makes perfect sense to turn under-used campus housing into retirement housing that would generate considerable income for the universities. These multigenerational communities can also provide excellent work experience for students, graduating into careers serving our aging population. This is a positive outcome for all parties, a win-win for all.
Are you a Director of student housing or Director of Student Living? We can assist in filling valuable unused campus housing.
